Savannah's Field Guide

I have traveled long and far, over rivers and through woods, to bring you this glorious display of my barbecue knowledge. Listen to my wisdom.

Preferences

Please Note: I am shamelessly bias and will rate accordingly.

I like:

  • Sweet, Thick Sauces
  • Ample Side and Dessert Options
  • Bread (Anyone who says they don't is a liar.)

I can do without:

  • Vinegar-based, Thin Sauces (Sorry Carolinas!)
  • Spicy Seasoning/Sauce (There is a time and place for it, and it's not on my barbecue.)
  • Small Servings
  • "Fine Dining" Barbecue (Like...Why?)

My Number One: The Mightest Meat!

Sugarfire Smokehouse, St. Louis, MO

The meat was great, the sauce was awesome, and they had a milkshake with a PIECE OF PIE in it. I think that speaks for itself.

Just... Don't

Sweet Cheeks Q', Boston, MA

Boston should stick with seafood. The meat and sauce was subpar. I don't even know what that thing they were calling potato salad was. The the service sucked. The part I find most upsetting about the whole experience was the fact that all of the yankees in there thought they were actually eating good barbecue. Poor misguided souls.

Honorable Mention

Virgil's Real Barbecue, New York City, NY

You wouldn't think there was any good barbecue in the north, especially after Boston, but Virgil's was a pleasant surprise. I give everything a solid "tasty". My theory is that the owners are southern.
